When most people see the Tower card, their immediate reaction is trepidation or fear. They're afraid that something terrible is about to happen or that their world will be turned upside down. But there is so much more to the Tower card than just destruction. Destruction doesn’t always mean sorrow and loss.
Â
The Tower can be a card of transformation and change. Sometimes change is hard. Sometimes it portends growth that is needed to move forward in life’s journey. Yes, something we were comfortable with is going to end, but that doesn’t mean that you must fear it. Then again, maybe we weren’t all that comfortable to begin with and it’s the kick in the pants we need. We may need to stop standing in a place of discomfort because we’re too afraid of taking the step we know we have to take.
Â
I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts recently and the topic was the Tower card. The Rider Smith Waite deck has some pretty scary imagery. There’s lightning, storm clouds, and bodies falling to the ground. The meaning Waite gave the card isn’t all that reassuring, either. The keywords include catastrophe, downfall, misery and distress. Sounds like a sunny card we’d all love to see in a spread, right? Not likely. I don’t blame anyone for being afraid of this card if all you’re told about its meaning sounds terrible.
Â
But what if that’s not the case? What if all that negativity isn’t what’s at the heart of the meaning? The podcast host had some interesting thoughts. The biggest being that you sometimes have to tear something down to rebuild it better and stronger. The Marine Corps trains Marines by tearing them down and building them back up. It’s been their philosophy for decades, or more. Take something to the base level and put it back together in a way that keeps the heart while making it all stronger.
Â
And then, during the podcast, the host said something that just blew me away. It fit perfectly with one aspect of the card that I resonate with very strongly. I want you to really digest this and let the power of this interpretation empower you. Forget the other meanings and recognize the truth that lies beneath this simple sentence, because it just might be the thing you most need to hear right now.

The Tower means losing something that you thought you couldn’t live without.
